It's been said that baseball is America's past time. I'm here to disagree. Instead, I nominate not just Football as America's past time, but Football Betting! But just what is it that makes football betting so popular? Why are there 100 times more football bettors than all of the other sports combined? Well, there are several reasons for this dating way back to the invention of the pointspread.

The number one reason, in my opinion, for the popularity of betting on Football games, is that 's a once a week sport. Ok, these days, during football season, there are games almost every day of the week, but the majority of the games are played on the weekend, college on Saturday and the NFL on Sunday, with one more crack at it on Monday Night. It's almost as if a sports gambler invented that schedule eh?

People lead busy lives. They work, socialize and have other obligations. If football played a 160 game schedule, and played daily for 6 months, the popularity wouldn't be there. There are so few games in a football season, when compared to other sports, that the magnitude of each game is enormous. The fact that it's a once a week deal is what ads to the popularity of football from a betting standpoint. Betting lines are posted on Sunday Night for the following weeks games. So the fan, or bettor, has an entire week to mull over the games.

He can zero in on a few games that really peak his interest and study those games all week. He can think about those games while he's at work. Talk it over with his buddies. Get other peoples opinions. Watch HBO's Inside the NFL and a host of other football related programs. He can research the games online. After all, he has an entire week to do this. All the while, the anticipation for these games builds to a fever pitch. By the time the weekend gets here, the anticipation is overwhelming. The bettor can't wait to see if he's right. If his research paid off. Surely if he is correct, it's because he's a genius. If he's wrong, well, more than likely it's only because of a bad call or a wrong bounce of the ball.

Betting on football is a week long process, not a one day affair, which in my opinion, is the number one reason for it's betting popularity. Sure, there are other reasons. It doesn't hurt that football is one of the most exciting sports played. It's a made for TV sport if there ever was one. Of course the invention of the pointspread back in the 50's helped greatly. It equalized the talent on the field. Prior to the spread, football was bet just like baseball is today, with a moneyline.

Having a pre game show built around betting back in the 70's didn't hurt things either. CBS had Jimmy the Greek Snyder, a lifelong gambler and Vegas oddsmaker as a co host! Pointspreads and predictions were talked about openly, unlike today where broadcasters have to choose their words carefully. Heck, Al Michaels still makes frequent betting references almost on a weekly basis. My favorite is late in a game when a score puts the game over the total and Michales says, "This game is now Over".

All of these things contribute to the popularity of betting on football in America. But it's all still secondary to the fact that Football is a once a week gig that gives everyone enough time to participate and still lead their busy lives at the same time.
